William Mason, Early Staffordshire Transferware, Netley Abbey Plate Sheep
WILLIAM MASON, "NETLEY ABBEY" ANTIQUE PLATE. This very fine and rare Staffordshire transfer ware plate dates to about 1812. The pattern is "Netley Abbey" and it was made by William Mason at Lane Delph in Stoke-on-Trent in England. This plate carries no mark, but this pattern is well documented by a number of scholars and is in the Transfer ware Collectors Club database.
One of only 6 patterns known by this maker, William Mason, the oldest son of Miles Mason, the founder of the great Mason family of potters. With a scroll border and well articulated transfers of the ruined abbey before which a shepherd grazes his sheep, it is a very lovely piece and quite rare. A dinner plate, it measures 10.25 in diameter. It is in excellent antique condition, free of chips or hairlines, the glaze is bright and shiny over the entire piece and it is free of utensil marks. There is a small amount of crazing in one spot, mentioned for accuracy.
