Qing Go Shonzui Dish Blue & White Porcelain Antique Chinese Tea Ceremony Plate
SUPERB ANTIQUE BLUE & WHITE PORCELAIN CHINESE SHONZUI DISH. Qing Dynasty (1636 - 1912). Exquisite, museum quality blue and white porcelain deep dish.

Hand painted in sublime blue underglaze of the finest Shonzui ware. Sublime imagery, outlined and filled with gradation and subtle wash, beautifully hand painted. The superb decoration features a scholar seated in a garden overlooking a distant constellation rising over serene lake.

He is surrounded by stylized tropical foliage and rocky outcrops. A detailed band of botanicals and intricate scenery further wraps around the border rim of the bowl. The edge exhibits a finely scalloped and raised edge, very expertly trimmed. Even the underside of this magnificent dish is decorated in fine style. In extremely fine condition, rarely seen on works of this age. Must have been carefully stored and appreciated over the centuries by its owners. See photos for all of the splendid detail. Shonzui wares were made in China for the Japanese market, and found great favor with tea masters for use in the service of Kaiseki, small dishes of delicate savory food, served during the formal tea ceremony. This tradition dates back to the Ming Dynasty and continued through the mid 1800s. Due to their rarity, there is great debate among scholars regarding the actual potter or family of potters who made these fine porcelains. The mark can be translated as "Go Shonzui Made" while also read as Go Shonsui. Alternately, the artist name was known as Goradaiyu, or Gorodayu Shonzui, or Xiang-rui. An absolutely stunning piece measuring approximately 6 inches across and just under 2 inches high, this elegant and tasteful low bowl is in pristine antique condition with just very minor wear commensurate with age. Dating to the Qing Dynasty, early to mid 1800s, this exceptionally fine porcelain work of art would make an outstanding addition for the collector of world class Asian antiques.
