Fuji in background with wax resist decorated edge using underglaze cobalt blue and a technique called Sumihajiki, in which they used a wax resist type paint called ` sumi ` which protects the white porcelain from the cobalt blue over-painting. The ` sumi ` is burnt off during firing, leaving white lines to contrast against the blue. The base has 5 spur marks for support in kiln, around the 1850's with newer technology, the number of spurs were reduced to mostly only one after which the practice was gradually phased out. It is in excellent condition for a 300 plus yr old piece. No chips, cracks or repairs. It measures 29cm or 11.5 inches in diameter. Perfect for the collector and for use. I have a wide variety of Asian and Continental porcelain and other antiques.
