Authentic Antique Chinese Blue and White Plate with Artemisia Leaf Mark, Early Kangxi Period. Second half of 17th century.
The authenticity of this plate and its period could be confirmed by its appearance and also by two important factors: the mark and the dimensions, that, when converted two ancient Chinese length measurement units, cùn or Chinese inch, show some whole and evenly fractured numbers. In terms of the mark - during this early period of Kangxi Emperor the use of reign marks on porcelain was restricted, instead of them figural marks were used, one of them was the Artemisia leaf. 8 1/4" (21 cm or 6 1/3 cùn) in diameter, 1 3/8" (3.35 cm or exaclty 1 cùn) deep.
The bottom base of the plate is 11.7 cm in diameter which is exactly 3.5 cùn. The item weighs 12 oz (330 g) without packaging.Classic Chinese blue and white floral design with flowers looking like mums in center of the plate and other flowers in 12 segments surrounding the center. The key of flowers and leaves runs on the edge of the plate's lip.
The same decoration (12 segments with flowers and ribbon-like floral key) is repeated on the outer lip of the plate. It will definitely enhance any room decor: living room, family, bedroom or display in the entry hall. A feast for a collector of ancient Chinese blue-and-white ware. Two concentric blue circles, the outer circle has a diameter of 66.5 mm which equals exactly to 2 cùn. Also known as Chinese inch, the length measurement unit, used in those days in China. Inside the circles there's a hand painted mark consisting of an Artemisia leaf and two branches, partly covered by the leaf. There are four areas of damage, though only one chip is clearly noticeable from the front and 2 are hardly visible. Here's the detailed list of all damages. Photo #7 shows the most visible from the front chip and two smaller ones; the same area seen from the back of the plate on photo #8. Photo #9 is the small chip of the bottom side of the edge, not visible from the front. Photo #10 shows the hairline crack of the lip, view from the front; the same area viewed from the back of the plate is on photo #11.
Photo #12 is the chip on the base (foot) on the back of the plate. All items are vintage or antique (except where noted). I acquire items only of distinct origin and quality.
