I hope that this is of interest to someone! If you are a collector please let me know if you have seen this design before!
The printed backstamp names the design'Pompeii'. Pompeii was rediscovered in 1748 and many Georgian's especially rich young men would have visited as part of the Grande Tour, so it was very much part of English consciousness at that time.
Generally decoration relating to the excavated buildings of Pompeii owe to the visual recording of Owen Jones who published the seminal work,'The Grammar of Ornament' in 1856- this plate predates this but the preoccupation with decorative styles from different cultures and historical periods is evident here. The condition is good as can be seen- there are little chips filled with white, but neatly done- nothing unsightly. It has a good clear backstamp. This is an interesting addition to a collection. I shall answer any questions as quickly as possible.
