An antique blue and white transferware dinner plate with hunting scene. Known as'The death of the bear'.
The border is decorated with exotic animals. The plate measures approximately 25.2cm in diameter. The maker's mark (unattributed) on the back features a thistle and rose cartouche with. A royal crown above and'Oriental sports' within a banner.
There is also a blue'x'. It is in good condition, no cracks or chips; it does have utensil wear/ surface scratches and glaze crazing/ glazing wear. My photos form an important part of the description so please take time to look at them all. Thank you for viewing my listing. I have read on the internet that the scene was by artist Samuel Howitt and was first published in a book in 1807. Originally the pattern was made by Spode and later copied by others.
