This plate was made for the export Canton market, during the late 18th century. The plate is octagonal in shape and well decorated in varying shades of cobalt blue, with a glaze of a very soft light blue/green shade. The plate has a central hand-painted pattern of a man fishing in a lake-land setting, by a house and large overhanging tree with other trees and a verandah in the foreground, all set within a double blue circle and border pattern.
On the outside of this central pattern there is a continuous inner rim border design with scrolls, flowers and other motifs. The under-glaze decoration has then been carefully hand-painted over glaze, with red, pink and peach colours with additional gilt highlighting. This is a very decorative plate. We date this piece to the late 18th century of the Qing dynasty, circa 1780.
