A Superb PAIR of Lambeth Delftware Chinoiserie Tin-Glazed 35cm Chargers c1780. A rather wonderful and extremely rare near PAIR of Lambeth tin-glazed earthenware 35cm chargers. Hand-painted with a Chinoiserie landscape with pavilions, rocks and trees, an inner border of diaper & sgraffito decoration and an outer tooth-shaped rim. The likely artist is Abigail Griffith or possibly Thomas Morgan.
A virtually identical (but smaller) plate is included in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. These really are superb collector's pieces.
Both are in excellent condition for pieces of 250-year-old tin-glazed earthenware. Both have the usual, extensive loss of the glaze from the outer rim and foot rim which is perfectly normal. The first charger also has extensive crazing to the glaze (again, perfectly normal) but, remarkably, the second charger has very little crazing at all. Both chargers also have a single chip to their rims.
There are no makers marks to the rear but given the identical piece in the V&A and similar others listed for sale I'm relatively certain these can be attributed to Lambeth. Each charger is just under 35cm diameter. One weighs just over 1kg and the second is just over 1.1kg. The second charger also has a slightly deeper well than the first so is about 5cm tall whereas the first is about 4.4cm tall.
