The central focal point is a Chinese musician seated within a large vase and playing the mandolin. The vase sits on a large table in a garden and is surrounded by a large flower on the right and tall stylized bamboo plants on both sides. The double border consists of a floral pattern in the outer band and a geometric pattern on the inner band. This early 19th C pattern is illustrated in "Blue & White Transferware" 1970, by A. Coysh, plate 133, page 92. At that time he named the pattern "Chinese Vase". Since then it has been discovered that the pattern was engraved by William Brookes for Wedgwood in 1805.

Wedgwood called the pattern "Blue Bamboo". It is also described under that name in "The Dictionary of Blue & White Printed Pottery" by Coysh & Henrywood, on page 45. They say, This is one of the earliest patterns used at Etruria and was introduced in 1805. The Transferware Collectors Club database also illustrates this pattern.
