Shonzui wares were made in China for the Japanese market, and found great favor with tea masters for use in the service of Kaiseki, small dishes of delicate savory food, served during the formal tea ceremony. This tradition dates back to the Ming Dynasty and continued through the mid 1800s. Due to their rarity, there is great debate among scholars regarding the actual potter or family of potters who made these fine porcelains. The mark can be translated as "Go Shonzui Made" while also read as Go Shonsui. Alternately, the artist name was known as Goradaiyu, or Gorodayu Shonzui, or Xiang-rui. An absolutely stunning piece measuring approximately 6 inches across and just under 2 inches high, this elegant and tasteful low bowl is in pristine antique condition with just very minor wear commensurate with age.
