Fine Canton Export Blue & White Oval Plate Willow 1800's
This treasured piece of Cantonese flatware showcases the skill and beauty known to that region. This piece is a later piece from the 19th or early 20th century. Cantonese porcelain is a unique blue and white painted design from the regional culture of the Southern Chinese/Lingnan twin provinces of Guangdong and Guanqxi. Being a port city, their arts and handicrafts were disseminated across the world and influenced arts worldwide. The Cantonese Porcelain is known for its bright color and detailed drawings and originated in the 16th century. The porcelain was important from the Chinese region of Jindezhen, where they specialized in porcelain production, and were painted in the by the Cantonese. Cantonese porcelain are characterized by a border pattern consisting of a band of blue containing a crisscrossed lattice in a heavier blue, with an inner border of scallops or swags.
A second border pattern, consisting of two parallel bands of diagonal lines that meet at an angle is also found. Painted on Cantonese porcelain is a landscape design that features a building or pavilion, bridge, willow trees, a river or stream, boats and distant mountains.
